The Korea Herald reported on Oct 23 that a male middle-school student in Cheongju allegedly made sexually explicit deepfake images of several female classmates from photos taken without their consent, including screenshots from video calls and photos taken from behind, and posted them online. One victim found the images on Oct 16; after they spread through the school, two students who were friends of a victim allegedly attacked him on a hiking trail behind the school the following Monday, and he was hospitalised. Cheongju Cheongwon Police said on Thursday Oct 22 that the two suspected assailants are being investigated without detention and that a preliminary investigation has been opened into the male student under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes. Police declined further detail, citing the ongoing investigation; the number of images and victims, the students' ages and any school response are not stated.

Damage

Sexual deepfakes of several minors spread online; a retaliatory assault that put a student in hospital

Sources

The Korea Herald. Evidence confidence: medium. Dated to the day a victim discovered the images (Oct 16); the assault was 'Monday', which the Oct 23 report implies is Oct 19; disclosed at the police statement reported Oct 23 (11:04 KST). Single source, no names, no counts beyond 'several', so confidence is medium. Harm 3 for harm to children; reach 1 for one school. Novelty 1: classroom deepfake abuse is a documented pattern in Korea since 2024; the retaliatory assault is what brought this case to police.
