Will AI replace teachers? What the evidence shows
Most US teachers now use AI to prepare lessons and materials, and it saves weekly users close to six hours a week. Experiments show AI tutoring can teach some material well and AI can roughly grade essays, but not accurately enough for grades that count. We found no evidence of teacher layoffs caused by AI; BLS expects flat employment for budget and enrollment reasons.
The job today
Task by task: what AI can actually do
In real use means deployed at scale; shown in tests or pilots means demonstrated but not yet routine; not yet means we found no credible evidence it does this reliably.
| Task | Status | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Preparing lessons, worksheets and adapted materials | In real use | A Gallup-Walton Family Foundation survey of 2,232 US public school teachers found about 60% used AI in 2024-25, mostly to prepare to teach; weekly users said it saved almost six hours a week. (The 74, Jul 2025) |
| Grading essays | Shown in tests or pilots | In a UC Irvine study of 1,800 middle and high school essays, ChatGPT matched human scores exactly only about 40% of the time (76-89% within one point on a six-point scale); researchers said it is not accurate enough for grades that count. (Hechinger Report, May 2024) |
| Tutoring students through new material | Shown in tests or pilots | In a Harvard randomized trial with 194 physics students, a carefully designed GPT-4 tutor produced median learning gains over double those of an in-class active learning lesson; the authors stress it was one course at one institution. (Scientific Reports, Jun 2025) |
| Delivering core academics with AI and human 'guides' | Shown in tests or pilots | Arizona approved Unbound Academy, an online charter where AI apps deliver two hours of core academics a day and certified 'guides' (one per 33 students in its application) motivate and support students; it is an outlier, not a district model. (Education Week, Jan 2025) |
| Building relationships and keeping students thinking for themselves | Not yet | In the same Gallup survey, 57% of teachers said weekly student AI use would reduce independent thinking and 52% said it would reduce critical thinking; even Unbound's founder says 'You cannot get rid of the human in the classroom.' (The 74, Jul 2025) |
Jobs evidence so far
Labelled by who says AI was the reason: the company itself, reporters, or a study.
- Arizona's state charter board approves Unbound Academy, an AI-first online school for grades 4-8 with about 200 expected students, staffed by 'guides' rather than subject teachers (company says AI; no layoffs involved) (Education Week, Jan 2025)
- Gallup-Walton survey: about 60% of public school teachers used AI and weekly users saved almost six hours a week; only 19% work at a school with an AI policy (study) (The 74, Jul 2025)
- Microsoft's study of Copilot conversations lists some postsecondary teachers (business, economics, library science) among the 40 most AI-applicable occupations; K-12 teachers are not on the list, and the authors say applicability does not mean job loss (study) (Tom's Guide, Jul 2025)
What to do
- Use AI for the prep, not the judgmentLet it draft worksheets, differentiated versions and quiz banks, then edit. That is where teachers report the time savings.
- Keep grading decisions humanResearch finds AI essay scores drift toward the middle and miss individual students too often for grades that count. Use it for draft feedback only.
- Teach students how to use AI wellTeachers worry AI will erode independent thinking. Designing assignments that require reasoning, drafts and discussion is a skill schools will need.
- Push for a school AI policy and trainingOnly 19% of teachers report a school AI policy and most got no training in 2024-25. Clear rules protect you and your students.
Questions people ask
Will AI replace teachers?
Not on current evidence. BLS projects flat high school teacher employment for 2025-35 because of budgets and falling enrollment, and its outlook does not mention AI. AI is mostly being used as a prep and tutoring aid.
Can AI grade essays?
Roughly, but not reliably for individual students. A UC Irvine study found ChatGPT agreed exactly with trained human raters about 40% of the time, so researchers recommend it only for low-stakes feedback.
Are AI tutors any good?
Some are, in controlled settings. A Harvard trial found a well-designed AI tutor beat an active-learning class for first-exposure physics material, but the authors caution that results may not carry over to other subjects or tools.
Are schools replacing teachers with AI?
We found one high-profile example of an AI-first school model (Unbound Academy in Arizona), which still employs certified human guides. We found no district laying off teachers because of AI.
How we grade
Each task is graded 'deployed' only when a named organisation reports AI doing it in real work at scale, 'demonstrated' when it works in tests, benchmarks or pilots, and 'not yet' when we found no credible evidence AI does it reliably. For job losses we separate what a company said in its own words ('company says AI') from what reporters or analysts attributed to AI ('reported as AI') and from research ('study'); employment and outlook figures come from the BLS 2025-35 projections.
