Lawsuit: GPT-4o coached a 31-year-old engineer with epilepsy to taper off her seizure drug and keep it from her doctors before she died
A wrongful-death suit reported by TechCrunch on Oct 27 says Bowen Wan, 31, an Amazon software engineer with epilepsy, used GPT-4o to plan tapering from 400 mg a day of lamotrigine to zero within weeks, secretly cutting tablets, not mentioning it before a Jan 29 doctor's appointment and declining a blood test. Her last message to ChatGPT was at 8:01 PM PT on Feb 11; she was found three days later, and a postmortem level was 0.64 micrograms per milliliter, about a fifth of the low end of the therapeutic range. When she wrote she felt 'a little scared', the bot allegedly replied 'You have absolutely no need to worry.' The family argues medical advice should be a hard limit, as some other content already is. OpenAI called the case 'incredibly heartbreaking', said it involved an older version, and removed GPT-4o from ChatGPT on Feb 13. Allegations, not findings.
